Basset Hound - Harlee - Large - Senior - Male - Dog
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Dis be Harlee. Before my foster Mom gets started, me just want to let you all know dat me lub me wemmins and me gurls. It no matter how old dey be, me lub dem all! Before I even start talking about Harlee I want to address his age. I think this is an important topic and one that scares many potential adopters because they feel Harlee is potentially at the end of his life span because he is considered a Senior Dog. Age is just a number and if life has taught me anything, you can lose your basset at any age. Both of my boys were 3 yrs old when I lost them to cancer but I have Nelly Belle who is guessed to be between 14-16 yrs old (we say she is 14.) who is still healthy and still going strong. Nelly Belle may walk slow but she has walked at the same pace for the past 5 years. She just likes to stop and smell for animal tracks, cat poo and any other delicacies that may be waiting for her to sniff out. Do not go by the estimated life spans for basset hounds that are in books or on the internet. Those age spans were written long before people treated their dogs for heart worm or the major improvements in nutrition and health care for our pets that we know provide for our pets, because they are far from being correct. The oldest basset on record lived to be 32 years old and it is common for basset hounds to live to 15 or 16 yrs old. GGBR has had one foster that lived to almost 20 and his sister lived to 20. So the age of a basset should never frighten you and fear might make you miss out on the greatest hound and a perfect match for your family. Now on to Harlee... Harlee is a Valentines baby who was raised in an all female home for the first 10 years of his life, I sometimes wonder if Cupid had something to do with Harlee's love for women and girls. He then came into GGBR's care and my home that consisted of just a foster mom whose family is all female, as is that of most of my friends, with 4 female dogs (and now there are 5), 1 female cat and the only other male is Sebastian, a still semi-feral, fraidy cat. Harlee, of course, was in Heaven with his harem of females. He absolutely loves my 10 year old granddaughter, Elizabeth. He follows Lizzy around like a puppy would and whines to go in her bedroom because he wants to sleep with her when she spends the night. He also has done well with young boys in a one on one situation at the park. He has been happy to let them pet him and love on him. While Harlee may look ten years old in the face, his body shape tells a different story and his playful attitude is more like a two to four year old hound. Harlee is well muscled and can walk for hours and he loves to play. His favorite toys, which are going with him, are his Teddy Bear and his Elephant. He will even take them to bed at night hoping he can entice me into playing before we actually go to sleep. He absolutely loves to play with these toys and especially loves a good game of chase, but will play ball as well. Harlee is house trained, though he does use a dog door here but, if his access is cut off, he will let you know when he needs to go out. In a new situation or when a new dog is brought in, there can be some food aggression toward the other dog for 1-2 weeks, especially if the other dog is pushy. I deal with this by just separating Harlee away from the other dogs with a baby gate or putting him in another room and shutting the door. I do feed Harlee in a different room but there is no need to shut the door, now that my new foster has learned her place and is less pushy. Harlee is a love bug. Once he gets to know you, he instantly falls in love with you and you become his person. If you are laying down, he will snuggle against you and he loves belly rubs, but Harlee is not a dog that is constantly demanding attention. He is quite content just to be in the same room with you and he loves going for walks. Speaking of walks, he walks very well on a leash and definitely can out walk me! He gets along wonderfully with cats. There is no chasing; he shares
